Unique mission of Diabetes and Metabolism Research Center [Music playing] Willa Hsueh, MD: My name is Dr. Willa Hsueh, and I direct the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Center. We link researchers throughout the campus, not just through the College of Medicine, to study metabolic disease, which affects millions and millions of people throughout the world. Our vision is to prevent and cure diabetes, obesity, and metabolic disease through innovative research. We're very interested in type 1 diabetes because unlike most centers where type 1 diabetes constitutes about 5% of the patient population, at OSU type 1 diabetes constitutes almost 20% of our patient population with diabetes. Our mission is to develop a state-of-the-art research program that links with our unique clinical programs in order to improve the health and well-being of our many patients. Naming of the center will be very important to expand these foundational programs, to offer pilot grants that will help us get critical preliminary data to develop applications that can be funded by national organizations, and most important, bring key technology that's needed to perform the science to our investigators.
