Pelotonia marks major milestone
Cycling event reaches 15th year, raises millions to support cancer research
Pelotonia marked a major milestone in 2023: 15 years of raising money to support cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).
“I owe my life to a drug that was developed chiefly here at Ohio State with the help of Pelotonia funding,” said Raphael Pollock, MD, PhD, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and a cancer survivor. “And so, I want to express my gratitude — personally and professionally — to the entire Pelotonia community for all you do to help us in our quest for a cancer-free world.”
The ride, with distances varying between 24 and 184 miles, took place during the first weekend of August and drew more than 11,000 participants — including riders, volunteers, challengers and those who raised money but did not ride. To date, the annual cycling event has raised more than $273 million.
“I’m brand new to Columbus, but what has resonated with me already is the community engagement and enthusiasm, and Pelotonia is a great example of that. It really is a movement,” said John J. Warner, MD, chief executive officer of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and executive vice president at Ohio State.
