Returning to life after abdominal aortic aneurysm

Paul Colgan faithfully monitored his heart health for years, but an ordinary Saturday morning brought a sudden urgency to his situation.

The 61-year-old from Westerville learned about 15 years ago that he had a congenital heart defect that would one day require a valve replacement. But when he passed out in his kitchen in the fall of 2022, he learned shortly thereafter that he also needed open heart surgery to treat a potentially deadly condition: an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

He had surgery at The Ohio State University Heart and Vascular Center to replace one of his heart valves and repair an aortic aneurysm, and he was soon raving about his increased energy levels and decreased anxiety.
